Everything has spiraled so far out of control that Dexter can no longer cover his tracks. When Dexter warns Hannah that a US Marshall is on her trial, she knows that what she should do (make a run) and what she wants to (stay with Dexter) do are two separate things. Hannah sees that Dexter can still have a long and happy life without her in it, but knows that the Brain Surgeon will continue to be Dexter’s puppet master until somebody gets caught or killed. It turns out that the Brain Surgeon is actually Evelyn Vogel’s “deceased” son, Daniel. Without Dexter knowing, Hannah uses herself as bait so that Dexter can finish off the Brain Surgeon and start over. Her sacrifice gives Dexter the motivation to mend things with Deb once and for all. There are no long loose ends and the two are able to turn a new page and leave the “Dark Passenger” behind.

Batista reopens the investigation and obtains a search warrant for Dexter’s house. He find’s Harrison’s bloodied stuffed animal and DNA testing reveals that the blood belongs to a recent homicide case. There is a cascading effect as more and more information surfaces about LaGuerta, Doakes and many others’ untimely deaths. Batista is shocked to find evidence linking Deb to La Guerta’s murder. Dexter catches wind of the investigation and goes into panic mode. He cannot fathom seeing Deb behind bars for his mistakes. Before Batista brings Deb into custody, Dexter makes one final gesture that proves his emotions are not divorced from humanity. He records and mails a complete confession to Miami Metro detailing his past transgressions. His confession is enough to clear Debra of all suspected criminal acts. Dexter then explains to Deb what he has done and convinces her that the only way she can set him free is to end his life. Deb is destroyed by the news, but knows that Dexter will not budge on his decision. His last words before she takes his life are, “Never get caught.”

When the Zach Hamilton trail goes cold his detective senses are triggered by Dexter’s persistence to back down from the case. He takes a sample of this evidence to a private DNA analyst and finds out that the blood belongs to Briggs – an open homicide investigation. Quinn didn’t follow protocol to uncover the incriminating evidence, so he has no grounds to make an arrest. Instead he corners Dexter at gunpoint and tries to force a confession. Dexter lunges at Quinn knowing that he will shoot. The series ends with Quinn holding Dexter’s lifeless body in a state disbelief and shock.

Once used to control, Dexter now feels more powerless than ever as the Brain Surgeon is still at large, Quinn continues to prod into Zach Hamilton, his relationship with Deb is strained and a US Marshall is hunting for Hannah McKay. Everything falls apart when the person you would least expect to catch Dex finds the most incriminating evidence. Niki Walters – Masuka’s daughter is practicing DNA analysis and takes a fiber off of Harrison’s stuffed animal while he is waiting to be taken to the beach. The fiber shows a positive DNA match to Niki’s surprise. Dex catches wind that Miami Metro is coming down on him and runs to Hannah. Deb (who rejoined the Miami Metro Department) and Quinn are the first to arrive at Dexter’s house to make the arrest before the couple can escape. Dex convinces the two to kill him on the spot because he would rather be dead than get caught. Out of respect for Dex and love for Deb, Quinn shoots and kills the vigilante couple on the spot.

There is a moment’s hesitation, but she covers her brother’s tracks. Dexter is not charged with the offense because he argues self defense. The show concludes as Dexter walks out of court with a smirk as a free man.

Detectives find Harrison’s bloody stuffed animal and are able to pin the murder to Dexter. After a short trial, Dexter is convicted to life imprisonment without the chance of parole. Hannah visits Dexter in prison and there is a moment of déjà vu. She explains to him that she had to get him to this point to help him realize that he is and always be a monster. She goes on to tell him that he doesn’t have to hide behind bars or lies if he chooses to be with her. Hannah then slips Dexter the same pill that helped her escape prison and tells him that they can have a life together and truly be themselves. He is taken back to his cell and left to his thoughts. The series ends with Dexter flushing the pill down the toilet.

They continue to run and the U.S. Marshall fires off two rounds intended for Hannah McKay. Dexter dives in front of Hannah and Harrison and takes a direct hit. Moments later Dexter dies on the scene with Harrison and Hannah holding him in a pool of blood.

Oliver Saxon gives Dexter two options: 1) Go after Saxon 2) Leave Miami for good. Dexter cannot shake the image of Dr. Vogel bleeding to death in his arms and decides that he must kill the Brain Surgeon once and for all. Upset with Dexter’s decision, Saxon uses Dexter’s relationship with Deb to his advantage. Saxon holds Deb hostage and it doesn’t take long for Dexter to come to the rescue. As Dexter tries to unfasten the bindings on Deb, he is attacked by Saxon. There is no escape for Dexter who finally meets his match. Both Dexter and Deb become the Brain Surgeon’s next two victims.
